How to Model a Bearing Plate and Schedule its Elevation in Revit

This screencast describes the procedures needed to model a bearing plate and schedule its elevation in Revit. Normally, you might want to create a family, but in this particular case, since we want to schedule the elevation, using a simple floor and then filtering it in a schedule is cleaner and more straightforward.

  1. Select the Floor tool from the ribbon.
  2. Click Edit Type in the Properties window. Then select Duplicate and rename your floor type to something descriptive like 1/2″ Plate.
  3. Edit the Structure in the Type Properties to match the bearing plate thickness and material you want to use.
  4. Assign a Type Mark with a prefix, such as “PL” so that you can filter out the plates in your schedule later.
  5. Select OK to close the Type Properties window.
  6. Sketch the plate as needed.
  7. Assign an appropriate Height Elevation Offset From Level for the sketched floor and complete the floor by clicking the green Finish checkmark in the Contextual Ribbon.
  8. Switch to a 3D view.
  9. Select the column and in the contextual ribbon select the Attach Top/Base button.
  10. The Options Bar has additional settings for how the attachment will actually work and clean up. In this case the default settings work, so simply click on the column to create the relationship between the “floor” bearing plate and the column.
  11. You can now adjust the elevation of the bearing plate element and the column will adjust.
  12. Create a Schedule by right-clicking on the Schedules/Quantities heading listed in the Project Brower and selecting New Schedule Quantities.
  13. Select the Floor category for the schedule and rename it.
  14. For the Fields, select Type, Type Mark, Elevation at Top.
  15. In the Filter tab select the Type Mark, Begins With, and type in “PL”.
  16. Select OK. Your schedule should now display the bearing plate and elevation. Note that you can also schedule the Site Elevation value by scheduling the Elevation at Top Survey parameter.
